DSM V: Overview, Diagnosis and Key Changes

TRAINING DESCRIPTION
The proposed training will include a combination of didactic lecture, group discussion, and clinical practice exercises to ensure the acquisition of knowledge, skill and competence in the DSM-5 changes for addiction and mental health professionals.

The training will focus on changes to substance use and related disorders, and common mental health disorders. Diagnostic criteria will be reviewed with opportunities for practical clinical applications. Specific attention will be focused on key changes. Discussion on the implications of these changes to screening, assessment, diagnostic coding and treatment planning will be explored.

The Learning Objectives:

  • Identify changes to substance use disorders and common mental health disorders in the DSM-5.
  • Develop a better understanding of the phenomenology of these disorders that prompted the changes.
  • Enhance skills in differential diagnosis specific to substance use and common DSM-5 psychiatric disorders.

SUBSTANCE RELATED AND ADDICTIVE BEHAVIORS

  • Crosswalk of changes to substance use disorders:
    • Subsance Use Disorder--Diagnosis and key changes
    • Intoxication and Withdrawal Disorders--Diagnosis and highlights
    • Substance Induced Disorders--Differential diagnosis
  • Additional Behavioral Addiction Disorders/revisions
    • Gambling Disorder
    • Recommended for Further Study: Caffeine Use Disorder, Internet Gaming Disorder

COMMON MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS

  • Differential diagnosis: Substance-induced vs. indepentdent psychiatric disorders
  • Crosswalk of changes to common mental health disorders:
  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders
  • Schizophrenia Spectrum and other Psychotic Disorders
  • Bipolar and Related Disorders
  • Depressive Disorders
